Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
